Abstract:
Project Status:
PCT patent.
Pre clinic study last stage- ADMET (safety [brain]).
Background:
For years the pharma industry and physicians are looking to optimize the medication treatment for patients. The optimal treatment will be one which can target a specific pathology and will not spread out to other regions. Such kind of treatment will give us a better results, will be more effective and will prevent all kind of unwanted side effects. Another challenge is passage of drugs throw the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The BBB is a highly selective barrier that acts as a gatekeeper between the bloodstream and the central nervous system (CNS). There are many categories of drugs that need to cross the BBB, including certain antidepressants, antipsychotics, anesthetics, and drugs used in the treatment of neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and Epilepsy.
The Problem:
Using traditional routs of application such as oral, iv, ip, transdermal or inhalation, we treat/ cover a large area, and we expect 'potential side effects', or 'pros and cons'. Another issue is that the drug industry is searching for a feasible solution for drugs entrance the brain. The ability of a drug to cross the BBB is a complex issue. As a result, it is often an obstacle to develop effective drugs for CNS diseases.
Solution and project uniqueness & novelty:
We used placenta stem cells to treat drug abuse disorder, and for treating depression. We achieved significant results and improvements. In our research we discovered 2 intriguing things: 1. Stem cells can navigate to a specific damaged area- 'homing' and complete recover the damage (neurogenesis). 2. Stem cells can pass the BBB carrying high MW molecules. We believe we can develop a bio-carrier unit that cross the BBB, and be guided to a selective treating region(!).
This kind of specific targeting will reduce side effects and provide an optimal treatment.
- we can do specific targeting.
- Delivery of high-molecular-weight substances like peptides, antibodies.
- Custom-designed treatment (drug on demand).
The stem cells are FDA approved.
The stem cells are safe and has no side effects
